WordPress is no longer just a blog software but a strong platform that it’s used for many different projects. One of the uses that is growing in popularity day to day is using WordPress as an e-commerce platform. Let’s review 10 plugins and themes that will help you to start your online store in no time.
Shopp
Shopp is one of the well established plugins for e-commerce with WordPress with a excellent approach to reporting encompassing sales statistics and marketing tracking. It’s very flexible, with widgets to configure your store and shortcodes to include products for sale in your blog posts. License ranges from $55 to $299.
Cart66
The integration of Cart66 with third party solutions like affiliates, email marketing or support is excellent, including MailChimp, iDev, Gravity Forms or Zendesk. Payment gateways like PayPal Pro, Authorize.net and others are only available in paid version, that ranges from $89 to $399.
JigoShop
The new kid on the block that is on everyone’s lips, blog post or tweet. JigoShop might indeed be one of the slickest e-commerce plugin on the WordPress ecosystem and its features are no falling behind. The responsive layout built in HTML 5 is a very welcome enhancement now that mobile trends are increasingly growing. One step checkout, product search and filtering, breadcrumbs, related products and more make this solution an excellent one.

Although simple, this plugin includes most functionality for entry level users who don’t want to get something overly complex. Supports stock control, PayPal gateway, among various others, downloadable products, affiliate programs and works with WordPress Multisite.
DukaPress
A relatively undiscovered gem, DukaPress is a plugin that allows you to set up a store and sell tangible or digital goods, implement single page checkout, coupons, collect statistics and more. It also includes features that on other solutions are only available in paid versions in other solutions like a grid view, product search or a module to display products related to the current product.
MarketPress

This plugin claims to be compatible with WordPress Multisite and BuddyPress. The Lite version lacks some things like Google Analytics E-commerce tracking and includes only the PayPal Express Checkout payment gateway but it’s more than enough for start a store. Digital downloads and coupons are supported too, and includes an AJAX shopping cart widget.
WP E-Commerce
One of the oldest and most solid solutions for e-commerce in WordPress, WP EC is offered for free to kickstart your store but if you need features like a grid view, live search, upload multiple images for a product or an ajaxified drag & drop shopping cart widget you’ll have to purchase these separately. There are other plugins like the affiliate module, an mp3 player and a members only content that are definitely interesting but of course, those are paid modules. Still it’s one of the best solutions here and the low prices of each module has almost no impact on a budget.
From my own experience setting up a digital goods store, the process was incredible simple and fast. Everything worked smoothly.
ViroShop is a full WordPress theme that in addition to usual product and store features, includes a customer wishlist, product carousel, cufon-powered fonts, coupon codes, built-in login and so on.
ShopperPress
Finally, we have another of the heavyweight solutions for WordPress e-commerce: ShopperPress. A long list of features includes tax calculation, coupon codes, galleries, product import and update through a CSV spreadsheet, a myriad of payment gateways, exhaustive product search, advertisement management and more.
I’ve tried the lite version years ago for a small store and it was already feature packed so I can’t only guess it has doubled its features by now.
Bonus: StoreFront Themes
The last resource for e-commerce in WordPress we will be pointing to are the StoreFront themes that are intended to work with WP E-Commerce plugin. These themes do not provide the e-commerce functionality by itself but they do an amazing job bringing that classy touch to your store.
